Five Questions To Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Your wedding day is a truly special day that the two of you will remember for the rest of your day. Naturally, you’ll want the whole thing documented with gorgeous photos of you, your fiancé, and your friends & family enjoying this special day!

One of the most important decisions when picking vendors for your wedding is who your wedding photographer will be. This can be a difficult process for some couples to find the right photographer who matches their style, personality and vibe.

Here are five questions to ask your wedding photographer to make sure they’re the perfect fit to capture your big day.

What is it like to work with you?

This is a super important question to ask your wedding photographer. You may love a photographer’s photos- but find out their working style or personality isn’t a great fit for you both. So asking this question in order to better understand what the wedding day will be like working with your photographer is a great way to make sure you two “click”!

Brandon’s take: When couples ask me this question, I describe my working style as “candid, easy-going, and fun”! I try not to let photography dominate the day with too many formal and posed photos, long photo sessions, or being “in your face” with the camera, no one wants that! We’ll be able to capture all of the necessary photos and the moments throughout the day while letting you two actually enjoy your big day!

Have you worked at my venue before?

This is also a helpful piece of information to know about your wedding photographer. Prior experience shooting at a wedding venue can make your day go even smoother, especially if your photographer has some photo spots scouted out in advance. However, if your photographer hasn’t shot at your venue before- don’t worry! Professional wedding photographers are used to shooting at a variety of venues and are very adaptable.

Brandon’s take: If your photographer has shot at your venue before- this is a great bonus! I have experience at dozens of venues all over the Hudson Valley, so odds are I have shot at your venue at least once before.

Do you have any vendors you like to work with?

If there’s anyone who knows another great vendor for your wedding, it’s your photographer! We are used to working with hundreds of different vendors over the years, and wedding vendors tend to network and refer each other for more work frequently. This could be your wedding DJ, wedding videographer, florist, wedding planner, and more.

Brandon’s take: I have a whole list of vendors I love to work with! I’ve met a lot of talented vendors in all aspects of the wedding day, and I would be more than happy to share them with you and help you find your other vendors!

How long does it take to receive our finished wedding photos?

This can be a dealbreaker for some couples. While you might vibe with your photographer’s personality and love their work, they might be so backed up with weddings, they may take numerous months to deliver your wedding photos. This isn’t the case with most photographers, but knowing what the “after-wedding” process is like is important to make sure you are satisfied from start to finish.

Brandon’s take: Fortunately, I am able to turn around photos rather quickly compared to other vendors! It takes me on average 6-8 weeks to deliver a final wedding package, but oftentimes less.

Are you insured?

Although not the most exciting question to ask- it can be an important one! Many venues require a COI- or Certificate of Insurance before a vendor such as your photographer can work at your wedding. This insures the safety of you, your photographer, the guests, and the venue’s staff.

Brandon’s take: Insurance is a crucial part of the business for any wedding vendor. I am fully insured and would be more than happy to provide my COI to anyone who needs it!
